14:24:53  <aktau>Hi guys! I'd like to use a static (non-malloced) buffer for a read operation
14:25:11  <aktau>And I was wondering, do the alloc_cb/read_cb calls run in sync and on the same thread?
14:25:33  <aktau>If not, I'll have to implement a ringbuffer with atomics
14:25:44  <aktau>If so, it'll be really easy (just an offset into a scratch buffer)
14:26:31  <aktau>Basically I'm wondering if calls to alloc_cb and read_cb can interleave (like alloc_cb(); alloc_cb(); read_cb(); read_cb();) and/or if they can run in separate threads?

20:43:11  <qard>Still can't seem to get it working with the internal field pointer. It just gives me a nullptr on the other end. :S

20:58:09  <tjfontaine>qard: do you ahve some example code to show? the problem with the External api is that V8 doesn't want you to actually pass it out to public JS functions
20:58:30  <tjfontaine>qard: and the problem with internal fields is you need your own constructor template
20:58:33  <tjfontaine>it's quite frustrating
20:59:12  <qard>I can see what I can share. The code isn't open source yet, but should be eventually.

20:59:53  <qard>But I basically have a situation where I have several classes with methods that return instances of other classes which receive the current class as arguments.
21:00:54  <qard>In JS land, you'd simply pass in the instance like `new OtherClass(this)`, but in C++ it seems to be somewhat more complicated.

21:02:59  <qard>The challenge I'm having is that I need to use that value in the constructor.
21:03:59  <qard>I've seen a bunch of examples of attaching internal field pointers to classes after construction, but nothing of attaching to something to pass as an argument to a NewInstance() call.
21:05:43  <qard>This is basically what I have at the moment; https://gist.github.com/Qard/df47710286f90b17aaee

21:05:56  <qard>That just shows the particular code path that is not working.
21:06:24  <qard>I'm calling context.createEvent() and the event constructor is getting a nullptr from the internal field pointer.
21:07:00  * mrvisserjoined
21:07:56  <qard>I'm basically trying to fake that a real instance has been passed in by just grabbing the data from the internal field pointer. A real instance and the faked one will have the same pointer in the same position. (in theory...)

21:10:08  <qard>I never plan on actually passing the externals into JS land, I'm just trying to figure out how to construct instances of things when I'm not in a method with a new args.This() context.

21:22:28  <qard>By the way, is there still work being done on your C addon layer? It'd be nice to just do away with V8 code entirely in native addons. Even with nan, there's still a lot of wrestling with API changes from V8.

23:18:26  <qard>I've been comparing how nan does it internally vs node_object_wrap.h and not seeing any obvious differences that'd make mine not work.
23:19:20  <qard>Do internal field pointers only work on particular types of handles?
23:21:33  <qard>Actually, it looks like I can do NanGetInternalFieldPointer in Context::createEvent and it works. So somehow it gets lost between putting it in argv and pulling it out in Event::New.

23:47:40  <qard>huh...it works now. Not entirely sure why. V8 seems to throw away the internal field pointers, for some reason, when the object is empty.
23:48:06  <qard>I just added on `obj->Set(NanNew<String>("foo"), NanNew<String>("bar"))` to verify the same object was getting through to the other side and suddenly everything worked.
